A bedsitter house in Glasgow; a Highland loch reputed to be bottomless; the first performance of Hamlet: the short stories which Moira Burgess has chosen for her first collection range widely in location and situation, while her central characters include a woman who hates her mother, a divorced father who can't get it right in the eyes of his son, and a rough sleeper on a Glasgow wasteground.
Abrasive, subtle and compassionate, these stories will linger in your mind long after you close the book.
Moira Burgess is a novelist and literary historian, born in Campbeltown, Argyll, and now living in Glasgow.
She has always seen novels and short stories as the heart of her writing.
Her non-fiction work includes Imagine a City (1998), on Glasgow fiction, and Mitchison's Ghosts (2008), on the Scottish writer Naomi Mitchison.
Kennedy & Boyd have published or reissued her longer works of fiction, The Day Before Tomorrow, The South Side, and Speak, Adam, first published as A Rumour of Strangers.
