Ethel Carnie (1886-1962) was a working-class writer and socialist activist who campaigned for social and economic justice and the rights of working-class men and women.
She worked in the Lancashire cotton mills from the age of eleven until her early twenties.
The Marriage of Elizabeth, following The Taming of Nan is a confident portrayal of the perceived working women's role in society. Her lead character, unusually perhaps, anticipates the downsides of the path her life is leading her, and devizes strategies to overcome them, while maintaining an outward image of competence.
