The rediscovery of Ethel Carnie Holdsworth's writings has taken decades, and scholars and readers are just beginning to appreciate the scope of her achievements.

Carnie Holdsworth is recognized as the first working-class woman novelist in the UK and the first to sustain a long and varied writing career.

Her literary output is impressive: she published three books of poetry, four books of original fairy tales, and thirteen novels as well as numerous poems, short stories, and journalistic pieces in newspapers and magazines.

She was also a political activist, engaged in the union and women's suffrage movements.

Her political beliefs were independent and prescient: she was an ardent pacifist and internationalist and, in 1924, cofounded the National Union for Combating Fascism, the first anti-fascist organisation in the UK.
